Most homeowners come to us with a feeling more than a fully formed plan. They know they want something better than what they have. They want a space their family will actually use, maybe a finished basement with a home theater or bar, a kitchen that finally works the way it should, or a bathroom that feels like it belongs in the rest of their home. They are not always sure how to bring it all together. That is exactly where we come in.

What Makes Our Process Different

When John receives a call from a new client, the first thing we do is set up a time to meet at their home. That first visit is completely free of charge. John comes out, walks the space, takes measurements, and begins thinking through how the basement can work best for your family. We call it a walk and listen, because that is exactly what it is. It is not the time for us to talk. It is the time for us to hear what you want for your home.

From there, we compile everything into a detailed email that includes an estimate range, a general scope of work, and a general project timeline. You will know from the very first week what is happening and when, so there are no surprises and no guesswork. At that point, we invite you to enter the design phase, where Claudia takes everything she learned and develops a fully custom design with architectural plans and photorealistic 3D renderings. We give you a variety of options and show you exactly what your finished basement will look like before you commit to a single material or product. Once you see it and love it, we build it.

Our Process

How We Work

Every project we take on follows a clear, structured process designed to keep communication open, decisions informed, and the build on track from start to finish.

1. Consult

John comes to your home at no charge for an initial walkthrough. He tours the basement, takes measurements, and begins planning how the space can work. Claudia learns your style, how your family lives, and your vision for the room. This conversation guides everything that follows, and we do not move forward until we clearly understand your goals.

2. Design

Once we understand your vision, Claudia creates a fully custom design tailored to your space. She develops the layout, selects finishes and materials, and builds detailed photorealistic 3D renderings so you can clearly see the final result. We review multiple options together and refine every detail until it feels right. We do not move forward until you are fully confident in the design.

3. Estimate

Because we fully develop every design before estimating, we provide accurate and complete pricing from the start. We do not rely on allowances or guesswork. We know the materials, finishes, and scope in detail, so your estimate reflects the true cost of your project. Once approved, your price remains consistent unless you choose to make changes.

4. Construction

With the design approved and the estimate signed, John manages the entire construction process personally. We handle all permitting, coordinate every licensed trade, and maintain a clean and organized job site throughout the build. You will receive regular updates so you always know where things stand. Our payment structure is straightforward: 30 percent at the start, 30 percent at key benchmarks during construction, 30 percent at the final benchmark, and you hold a 10 percent retainer until all final inspections are complete and you are fully satisfied with the finished product.

5. Completion

Before we consider any project finished, we conduct a thorough final walkthrough with you to review every detail of the completed space. If anything needs attention, we address it before we close out the job. Every project we complete is backed by a one-year craftsmanship and product warranty, and many of the products we install carry their own manufacturer warranties beyond that. Our goal is not simply a finished basement. It is a finished basement that delivers everything we discussed on day one, and a client who feels genuinely proud of what their home has become.

Our Warranty

Every HJA project is backed by a one-year warranty covering craftsmanship and installed products. Many of the materials and products we use, including cabinetry, carry additional manufacturer warranties that extend well beyond that.
